Dramatic scenes unfold blocks from the White House as peaceful protest turn violent

Dramatic scenes are unfolding just blocks from the White House in Washington DC after a peaceful protest turned violent.

Rubber bullets and tear gas is being used on protesters, with 9News correspondent Amelia Adams reporting live as chaos unfolds.

One protester said the rally started off peaceful before police and the National Guard escalated the situation, sparking crowds to break through a set of barriers near the presidential home.

He said one member of the Secret Service kneeled in solidarity with protesters but the National Guard remained standing with their shields drawn.

"It is that type of intimidation tactics why we are being here today. Everyone is being peaceful and kneeling and taking the knee in respect for George Floyd," a protester told Amelia Adams.

"Then officers came and tried to assert their authority, unprovoked, that caused everything to change.

"That is what is sad about this whole thing. This is exactly what we are trying to change by coming out here and entering our constitutional rights for free speech.

"I think it would have caused a huge impact and moment of change, a moment of solidarity to say, 'Hey, we understand your pain'.

"'We are not on the other side of the fence to harm you. We are on the other side of the fence to protect you as you execute and implement your First Amendment rights.'"

The protester said people were "shaking the fence a little bit" but did not do anything serious to incite a response.

"Come down the street, they start throwing bomb-type things to disperse us and shooting.

"We need to stop incarcerating African-American people and killing them. We need a complete 180 of what we have now.

"It is going to take a lot, but we're going to be here every day if they don't."
