Investigations are underway into why a speeding tanker drove at crowds of people protesting in the US city of Minneapolis, with police confirming it is being treated as a "criminal matter".
Vision of the incident was posted online to Twitter, showing the tanker on the I-35W bridge where thousands of people had gathered in anger over the death of George Floyd while in police custody.
As it speeds towards them, people can be seen leaping out of harm's way before the truck comes to a stop.
9News US Correspondent Tim Arvier, who is in Minneapolis, said the driver was dragged from his cabin by the protesters, who then began to beat him up.
But they said they wanted to keep the driver alive so he could face justice.
The driver reportedly told police he was already on the freeway before it was closed for the demonstrations.
Authorities have confirmed an investigation is underway to find out how the truck was able to get onto the bridge.
The driver was taken from the scene in an ambulance to hospital but has since been released into police custody.
"The Minnesota State Patrol and Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are jointly investigating what happened with the semi that drove into demonstrators tonight on I-35W," the Minnesota Department of Public Safety said in tweet.
"The incident is being investigated as a criminal matter. We will share more when we have it."

"The truck driver was injured & taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He is under arrest. It doesn't appear any protesters were hit by the truck.
"We are working with our partners at [the Minnesota Department of Transportation] to determine how the semi got onto I-35W."
