WA Premier takes swipe at Greg Hunt over border stoush: 'I wouldn't know him if I met him'

Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan has taken a swipe at Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt who hinted the state could accelerate its border reopening plans to potentially host the fifth Ashes Test next year.

The state has adamantly vowed to keep its borders shut to interstate travellers until late January or early February - when it is expected to hit its 90 per cent vaccination milestone.

However, Mr Hunt suggested that Western Australia may reopen its border earlier than planned, so Perth could potentially host the fifth Ashes Test between Australia and England cricket teams from January 14 at Optus Stadium.

Mr McGowan rebuked the claims yesterday, saying "he's got a very vivid imagination".

"I have never met Greg Hunt," he said.

"I have never spoken to Greg Hunt. I wouldn't know him if I met him."

The premier said he did not know why Mr Hunt thought the state would reopen earlier than planned and no decision had been made about the Ashes.

"He has no basis to say that," Mr McGowan said.

"I just urge the Commonwealth Government to stop making things up."

Western Australia is set to reach its 70 per cent double dose vaccination target on Monday.

Further clarity on the easing of border restrictions is expected once the 80 per cent vaccination milestone is met in December.
