Father injured while protecting neighbour during home invasion

A man has been attacked while protecting his neighbour when three men broke in and ransacked a home in Melbourne's south-east.

The father-of-three jumped the fence after he heard a woman scream from the Lindenow Court property in Cranbourne North about 7.15pm last night.

One of the offenders hit the "extremely brave" 41-year-old with an unknown weapon before he and the group fled the scene.

The well-intended neighbour was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Detective Senior Constable Alex Fiore said the man was simply relaxing at home when the aggravated invasion happened next door.

"An innocent man was just in the backyard with his family and has come to the aid of a neighbour, and unfortunately been attacked himself.

"The victim is extremely brave."

Detective Senior Constable Fiore said detectives were trying to establish if the victims of the invasion knew the offenders.

"Police are investigating whether the home invasion was targeted or an isolated incident," he said.

"We think there may be a relationship but we're not sure."

The incident has affected the local community and police as well, Detective Senior Constable Fiore said.

Police are asking any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or file a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
