NSW records 282 cases, one death as regional travel reopening nears

Sydney is less than a week away from reopening to the rest of New South Wales, with the travel barrier set to come down on Monday.

The state recorded 282 new COVID-19 cases and one more death in the 24 hours to 8pm yesterday.

Premier Dominic Perrottet yesterday reinforced his warning that case numbers and hospitalisations would rise as the state continued to re-open.

Asked if NSW had "dodged a bullet" relating to COVID-19 forecasts for October, Mr Perrottet said the pandemic was "not over".

In September, health authorities forecast a spike in hospitalisations and deaths in October.

But with October now drawing to a close, the predicted crunch has thus far failed to materialise.

Mr Perrottet said NSW's uptake of vaccination had helped the state manage the pandemic, but that hospitalisations and case numbers would begin to rise again as the state opens up.

"To say there are no challenges ahead would be wrong," he said.

November 1 will not only mark the return of unrestricted travel between Sydney and regional NSW, but also the end of quarantine for fully vaccinated arrivals into NSW.

An announcement on booster shots for COVID-19 vaccines is also expected this week.

Essential workers and frontline health workers are likely to be prioritised, as they were during the initial vaccine rollout.

The government aims to have administered about two million third doses by Christmas.

Although the plan is yet to be formally announced, it is likely that a six-month gap between second and third doses will apply.
