Severe cold front, destructive winds to hit WA

Severe weather is on the way for Western Australia with destructive winds, heavy rain and abnormally high tides forecast today.

The conditions are the result of an aggressive cold front impacting the South West Land Division from this afternoon which will continue tomorrow.

The front is expected to impact the Lower West, South West, South Coastal, South East Coastal, Great Southern and parts of Central West and Central Wheat Belt districts.

Conditions will start to deteriorate across the Perth Metro area and southwest from this afternoon, extending northwards and eastwards tonight.

The strong cold front is expected to reach the far southwest early Tuesday morning before moving east across the South West during the day.

Winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts to around 120 kilometres per hour are likely and emergency services have warned residents to prepare for damage to homes.

Unstable westerly winds, and a front and trough are generating gusty winds, showers, storms and highland snow over South Australia, Victoria, NSW and Tasmania.

It will be mostly dry elsewhere under a high.
