A shopper at a Sydney Bunnings Warehouse told off a stranger about his face mask, then spat on him.
Police are now looking for the unidentified man.
NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Gary Worboys said the confrontation began when the man began chastising a 51-year-old man about the way he was wearing his facemask.

As the argument escalated, he spat on the 51-year-old.
"Police inquiries have failed to reveal the identity of that person, they have looked at CCTV and ask questions," Deputy Commissioner Worboys said.
"That behaviour is just disgusting.
"If people have an issue that they cannot resolve with some cordial communication between two people in and around these retail settings, they should ring the police."
Anyone who knows the identity of the spitter is urged to call Crime Stoppers.
In another incident, a man travelled from Sydney to Mudgee to meet another person he had met on social media.
He was issued with a $1000 fine and sent back to Sydney.
Deputy Commissioner Worboys said police in country NSW were actively looking for people from Greater Sydney who should be in lockdown.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has said that NSW will "get to where we need to go" at the end of the three-week lockdown if "every single person does the right thing".
"Experts have told us it is achievable. If it was not achievable, we would not have provided those details to the community," Ms Berejiklian said.
"That's assuming everybody does the right thing and we work together to make sure we stop the spread."
