Turkish man pushed pregnant wife off cliff after selfie, court hears

A Turkish man took a photo with his pregnant wife then pushed her off a cliff after taking out a life insurance policy for her worth thousands of dollars, prosecutors have alleged.

Hakan Aysal, 40, has been charged with premeditated murder more than two years after the death of his wife Semra Aysal, 32.

At the time the fatal fall was considered a tragic accident, with Mr Aysal telling police she lost her balance and slipped.

Hakan Aysal is accused of pushing his wife off a cliff moments after this photo was taken.

Nobody else was around when Mrs Aysal fell more than 300 metres in a scenic part of Mugla province, in Turkey's southeast, in June 2018.

More than two years later, Mr Aysal was detained in November after it emerged he had taken a life insurance policy out for his wife, the Hurriyet Daily News reported.

"In line with his plan, the defendant took out personal accident insurance on behalf of his wife, with a guarantee of 400,000 liras (A$74,000), with the sole beneficiary being himself," the indictment read.

Semra Aysal was seven months pregnant when she died.

The indictment claims Mr Aysal took his wife to the cliffside while they were on holidays, then pushed her off the cliff.

She was seven months pregnant at the time.

A short time later he went to the insurance company to claim the payout.

Mr Aysal is facing a life sentence if found guilty.
