Gravedigger killed as hole he was at bottom off collapses on him

A New York gravedigger has died after the hole he was at the bottom of collapsed on him.

Rodwin Allicock was at the bottom of the more than two metre deep grave when the sides collapsed about 8.30am yesterday, Suffolk County Police said.

His co-workers frantically tried to dig him out, but were unsuccessful.

A New York gravedigger was buried alive and died before he could be excavated.

The 42-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was digging a grave in Washington Memorial Park, a cemetery on Long Island outside of New York City.

"Officers from the Suffolk County Police Emergency Service Section as well as Suffolk County Fire Rescue coordinators, representatives from the Suffolk County Department of Public Works, and members of the Middle Island Fire Department, Hagerman Fire Department, Selden Fire Department and Setauket Fire Department responded to the scene," Suffolk County Police said in a statement.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is now investigating Mr Allicock's death.
