Albury teen accused of terror offences to remain behind bars

The lawyer for a NSW teenager charged with terror-related offences has requested he receive mental health treatment in custody while awaiting a court hearing next year.

Tyler Jakovac was yesterday arrested in Albury on the NSW-Victorian border by the NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team, comprising of the Australian Federal Police and NSW Police Force, after an "escalation of his online behavior".

Police allege the 18-year-old had been using social media to access "extreme right-wing material" and "bomb machining materials".

An 18-year-old Albury man has been arrested and is expected to face terror charges.

AFP Assistant Commissioner Scott Lee yesterday said Mr Jakovac "has an extremely right-wing ideology and is focused on neo-Nazi, white supremacist and anti-Semitic material".

Police said the teenager had recently expressed support for a "mass casualty event" and potentially his involvement in one.

Mr Jakovac is facing charges of urging violence against members or groups and advocating terrorism.

The charges carry maximum sentences of seven years and five years in prison.

Mr Jakovac is being held in a Corrective Services building in Albury and did not appear in court today.

His lawyer did not apply for bail today with the case due to be heard in Parramatta Local Court on February 26.
