Perrottet set to be NSW Premier

New South Wales Treasurer Dominic Perrottet is set to become the state's next premier after nominating himself for the top job and leader of the NSW Liberal Party.

Mr Perrottet officially put his hand up to replace Gladys Berejiklian at a snap press conference last night.

Minister for Jobs and Tourism Stuart Ayres threw his support behind Mr Perrottet on Sunday afternoon and put himself forward as the new deputy leader of the party.

Dominic Perrotet is a likely contender in the battle to be the next premier of NSW.

Mr Perrottet is the current deputy.

Planning Minister Rob Stokes is still in the running to take over but 9News understands he is likely to pull out of the race before Tuesday's Liberal party room meeting, leaving Mr Perrottet as the only contender.

Mr Perrottet began his brief Sunday afternoon address by acknowledging NSW was "a much better place today" because of Ms Berejiklian.

"NSW is stronger today because of her tireless serving leadership to the people of NSW," he said.

The 39-year-old father-of-six acknowledged the state was enduring a difficult time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Perrottet's self-nomination for the premier role comes after Ms Berejiklian resigned from her position on Friday after the Independent Commission Against Corruption announced a public hearing into her conduct.
