Apple juice recalled over contamination fears

An apple juice sold at Coles supermarkets in New South Wales and Victoria has been recalled due to contamination fears.

Original Juice Co. Black Label's 1.5L Cloudy Apple Juice with a use-by date of October 7, 2021 has been recalled due to possible microbial contamination with the mycotoxin patulin.

The NSW Government Food Authority said any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.

Thirsty Brothers Pty Ltd is conducting a recall of Original Juice Co. Black Label Cloudy Apple Juice 1.5L. The product has been available for sale at Coles in NSW and VIC.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), patulin is a mycotoxin produced by a variety of moulds.

Patulin can also occur in various mouldy fruits, grains and other foods.

"The acute symptoms in animals include liver, spleen and kidney damage and toxicity to the immune system," the WHO said.

"For humans, nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances and vomiting have been reported."

Anyone who purchased the product with the relevant expiry date should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The product recall is currently being conducted by Thirsty Brothers Pty Ltd.
