Victoria has recorded 16 new cases of COVID-19, all linked to current outbreaks

There have been 16 local cases of COVID-19 detected in Victoria overnight on the state's third day of lockdown.

More than 53,000 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours.

Earlier this week, Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews plunged the state into a snap five-day lockdown in a bid to quash the growing outbreak.

So far, there have been 10,000 people listed as close contacts, while the list of exposure sites continues to swell.

The latest outbreak is believed to be a result of three removalists who drove from NSW to South Australia, stopping in Victoria on the way, and a family who moved from Sydney to Melbourne and broke quarantine rules.

Furniture removalists from red zones have now been barred from entering Victoria for at least two weeks.

There are currently just five essential reasons Victorians are permitted to leave their homes, including work, buying food, care responsibilities, exercise and getting a COVID-19 vaccine.
