Sydney lockdown likely to extend past two weeks

An expert is warning Sydney could be face a much longer lockdown period after it was already extended to July 30.

Local cases in NSW are predicted to be in the 60s today, but a big push in the Fairfield local government area which began yesterday won't return figures from that location for 24-48 hours.

Chair of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Professor Jane Halton said there is a strong likelihood the lockdown will go further past this date if local infection numbers remain high.

"I think it's almost undoubted that that's what's going to happen," Professor Halton said.

"The number of cases in the community who have been infectious mean that there's still spread that has to be found.

"I hate to say this - I think we're looking at several more than just two weeks, in terms of lockdown."

An additional two weeks were added to Sydney's lockdown yesterday as NSW recorded a further 97 locally acquired COVID-19 cases.

Seventy of those cases were linked to Sydney's south-west, where testing has been ramped up, particularly in Fairfield where workers are now required to get cleared every three days if they are an essential worker who has to venture out of that government area.

New cases have been detected in hospitals in the area, including a pregnant woman who was undergoing surgery at Liverpool Hospital and a staff member at Westmead Hospital who was already fully vaccinated.
