NSW authorities shut down idea of Melbourne-style 'singles bubble'

There will be no Melbourne-style "single person bubble" for the remainder of Greater Sydney's lockdown, NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard has confirmed.

Currently, romantic partners are allowed to visit each other in their homes, but friends are not specifically permitted – though visits for "care and compassion" are allowed.

Concerns have been raised since the lockdown was announced for single people, especially those who may be living alone, and the effect it has on their mental health.

But Mr Hazzard shut down the idea of a "single-person" bubble this morning, instead encouraging people to catch up outdoors.

"If they can be outside and go for a walk, that is better," he said.

"If that's not possible, I guess the advice has been, if you're going into someone's house for care and compassion and you are one person visiting, do it out on the balcony or out in the garden.

"Apply whatever you think would be the safest way to try and do it in an open-air environment."

Under Victoria's "single-bubble" rule, residents in metropolitan Melbourne who lived by themselves were able to nominate one friend or relative to visit their home while wearing a mask.

The decision was made by the Victorian Government following online petition which gathered more than 26,000 signatures.
