Newborn killed by family dog on NSW Central Coast

A newborn baby boy has died after being mauled by his family's dog in the middle of the night on the NSW Central Coast.

Emergency services were called to the family home on Jeffs Close in Kariong at around 2.20am this morning.

First on the scene were the Brisbane Water Police, who began performing CPR on the injured five-week-old before paramedics arrived and took over.

However, the baby was unable to be revived and died at the scene.

The dog, which is owned by the family, has been secured.

Police say that at the time of the dog attack, the baby boy's parents were at home and no other people were on the premises.

A crime scene has been established, but police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.
