Man tests positive to COVID-19 in Adelaide after quarantining in NSW

An elderly man who returned to South Australia from hotel quarantine in NSW has tested positive to COVID-19 in Adelaide.

Premier Steven Marshall said the 81-year-old man from Argentina was in hotel quarantine when he suffered a fall and was treated in hospital there for 10 days.

He then returned to South Australia on July 8. He developed symptoms over the weekend and went to Modbury Hospital, in Adelaide's north-east, where he tested positive to the virus.

The emergency department at Modbury Hospital, in the city's north east, is in lockdown, 9News understands.

"The primary concern at the moment is putting everyone who could possibly have come into contact with this man, into quarantine," Mr Marshall said.

He said the man's close contacts have been tested and so far his daughter and grandson have tested negative.

"We have immediately put our contact tracers onto this situation, we want to move as quickly as we can," Mr Marshall said.

Chief Public Health Officer Professor Nicola Spurrier said hospital staff recognised the man had respiratory problems and took him straight to the emergency extended care unit when he presented to the hospital.

Professor Spurrier said there are now a number of exposure sites including an optometrist, food warehouse and a local Commonwealth Bank branch.

She said the full genomic testing was yet to be conducted but authorities were assuming for the time being that it was the Delta variant of the virus.

Mr Marshall said anyone who has been in contact with the 81-year-old man will need to get tested and quarantine immediately for 14 days.

New restrictions to be announced

The premier has flagged that some additional restrictions will be announced later today, however it looks like no lockdown will be announced at this stage.

"It's very unlikely that we are going to be announcing a lockdown in South Australia and my strong message to the people of South Australia is that we just need to respect these restrictions," Mr Marshall said.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Vale School has been closed over fears of COVID-19 exposure.

Parents have been told a member of the school community may have come into contact with someone who's tested positive to COVID-19.

Mr Marshall today revealed the grandson of the positive case has visited the school during the school holidays prompting the warnings.

The school is expected to reopen tomorrow.
