'It won't be tolerated': NSW Police vowing to crack down on more protests

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller has promised any future protests in lockdown would be met with a heavy police presence.

"There are some discussions, there is information on the Internet at the moment about a potential protest this Saturday," he said.

"We will be heavily policing that event. We will take the ground very early. You will be arrested and prosecuted."

His comments come after thousands of people turned out across Sydney's CBD on Saturday in a so-called 'freedom rally' in defiance of stay at home orders.

Similar protests were held in Melbourne and Brisbane, prompting authorities to issue warnings about the potential for a super-spreading event.

"The community has spoken about that behaviour. The Premier has spoken about that behaviour and it won't be tolerated again," Mr Fuller said.

He said 227 personal infringement notices had been issued in the past 24 hours, 107 of which were linked to the Sydney protest.

Mr Fuller encouraged the community to continue dobbing in people they recognised at being at the protests.

"We have received 10,000 Crime Stoppers reports since Saturday in terms of criminal behaviour and breaches of the health order at the protest which is an amazing outcry by the community, not just in terms of their disgust at the protest but the way that the police, the mounted unit in particular, were treated during that.

"We have a Strike Force established and they will continue to investigate and chase down every individual that we can identify."

He said anyone found to have been taking part in the illegal protests "will be either arrested and/or given tickets for their behaviour".

"It is not just about whether it is an unauthorised protest, it was about the danger that they put all of us at in terms of the Delta variant."
