Gusty winds and rain heading for Australia's east after cold snap

There's been some relief from the cold snap this morning with temperatures climbing slightly higher after much of the country experienced its chilliest day of the year.

Temperatures plunged across the east yesterday, with parts of Queensland waking to their coldest July morning in almost two decades.

Temperatures were -4.4C in the town of Oakey, near Toowoomba, the coldest July morning for them since 2004.

While in Sydney, it was the coldest morning since August 2018 yesterday with temperatures creeping just above 5C.

Perisher recorded the country's lowest temperature at -9.3C.

Today, a low-pressure system is causing a few issues across western Victoria and western NSW, pushing east and bringing possible showers and gusty winds along the eastern seaboard.

Western Victorian and western NSW are likely to get rain with that system tracking towards the coast for the weekend.

Around the capital cities today, there's a high chance of showers for Brisbane.

There'll be possible showers in Sydney, rain at times for Canberra.

Melbourne will get an early morning shower and Hobart will remain partly cloudy.

A shower or two is on the way for Adelaide, a possible shower in Perth while there'll be sunshine in Darwin and Alice Springs.
