Baby dies after being hit by Melbourne train, woman seriously injured

The homicide squad has been called in to investigate the death of a baby who was hit by a train in Melbourne's east.

Police said the three-month-old and a woman were both struck about 5.10pm on Sunday at Kumbada Avenue in Upwey.

The child was flown to hospital but later died. The woman was rushed to hospital where she was battling life-threatening injuries while under police guard.

Victoria Police said homicide squad detectives were investigating the incident.
