Sydney urged to take outbreak seriously

Sydney needs to take the latest virus outbreak seriously, a medical expert says, as the city waits to see if the Bondi cluster has spread further.

NSW AMA president Danielle McMullen said people should be more concerned - even if many of the cases linked to the current outbreak were already in isolation.

"I don't think the vibe has changed in Sydney enough to reflect the serious outbreak situation that we're in," Dr McMullen told Today.

"I do think that people need to be more concerned than they seem to be at the moment."

She said if testing numbers don't rise and cases grow more restrictions could be brought in.

Face masks must now be worn indoors and on public transport until at least Wednesday.

"The last couple of cases were already in isolation, it shows our contact tracing is working," she said.

"But the next few days will tell.

"We certainly need to get testing numbers up and, if that doesn't happen, and we start to see more cases creeping around, harder measures will come in."

Dr McMullin urged people, especially over 60s, to go for their vaccination.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is expected to give an update on the outbreak this morning.

Two cases announced yesterday will be included into today's numbers.

Yesterday's two new infections were family members of two people already diagnosed who had already been in isolation.

One person is in intensive care with the virus in NSW but most people diagnosed are not in hospital.

Authorities have called on people to continue to get tested if they have any symptoms or have been to one of the growing list of exposure sites.

A bus route is among the new alerts.

The state is also getting more vaccine doses of the Pfizer vaccine, with people asked to come forward if eligible.

The state is vaccinating all over 50s via GPs and NSW Health, and over 40s can register to book via Service NSW.
