Indian Olympic medallist arrested in murder case after wrestler beaten to death

An Indian two-time Olympic wrestling medallist has been arrested in connection with the murder of another wrestler.

After three weeks allegedly on the run, Sushil Kumar was today arrested by Delhi Police in the Indian capital New Delhi.

The 37-year-old has been wanted for questioning since 23-year-old Sagar Dhankhar, a former junior national wrestling champion, was beaten to death on May 4.

Mr Kumar was present when Mr Dhankar was killed at New Delhi's Chhatrasal Stadium in a clash between rival wrestlers, according to police.

Mr Dhankar died after the brawl.

"We have recorded statements of all the victims and they all made allegations against Sushil Kumar," senior police officer Guriqbal Singh Sidhu told Indian media.

Mr Dhankar was the son of a police officer.

The 37-year-old Olympic medallist had been on the run since May 4.Mr Kumar is flanked by Delhi Police after his arrest.

"We have maintained from the first day that [Mr Kumar] should join the police probe, and present his case," Delhi Police Deputy Commissioner Chinmoy Biswal told AFP.

"If he hadn't gone on the run there wouldn't have been any warrants or reward for his arrest.

"Whatever he needs to say, he should come forward."
