A Melbourne Surf Life Saving Club has warned against digging deep holes at the beach after a teenage boy became trapped by sand at the weekend.
The boy had been building sand tunnels at Point Lonsdale back beach on Victoria's Bellarine Peninsula when the structure collapsed, requiring him to be dug out and rescued by paramedics about 5.30pm on Sunday.
He was taken to Geelong Hospital in a stable condition for further assessment.
Carrum Surf Life Saving Club President Ben Rooks advised against digging deep holes at the beach on 3AW this morning, warning the activity was dangerous.
"Beaches are very dynamic environments and sand is inherently unstable, so the advice would be: don't dig big holes," he said.

Mr Rooks said a hole big enough to fit a person inside was "too deep" and "not safe".
"You often can't just pull yourself out," he said.
