Few line up for Boxing Day sales amid virus warning

Far fewer crowds than usual have turned up for the opening of the Boxing Day sales, amid coronavirus warnings.

There was a handful of bargain-hunters waiting outside Sydney's David Jones store when it opened at 6am, with barriers set up by Myer nearby largely empty.

A small crowd waited for fashion shop Zara to open, with a small amount of shoppers turning up as the rest of the Pitt Street Mall started to open.

In Melbourne, keen shoppers were offered hand sanitiser at Chadstone The Fashion Capital centre.

Earlier, NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian had warned people not to head to Sydney's shops as usual on December 26.

"Please, we want to discourage people," she told reporters.

"We know this is not the easiest message to give to those retailers but we want to discourage people go to the CBD tomorrow.

"If you're going shopping in the CBD, make sure you wear a mask."

Seven new virus cases were confirmed on Christmas Day.

Four are linked to the Avalon cluster and three are under investigation.

The cluster has passed 100 cases.
