A 10-year-old child is in a critical condition after being hit by a car in Wollongong on the NSW South Coast.
Paramedics were called to Waples Road in Unanderra just after 8.30am after reports a child had been hit by a car.
Four crews and a rescue helicopter were sent to the scene where the 10-year-old boy was treated for a significant head injury before being airlifted to Sydney Children's Hospital in a critical condition.
"Going to a road accident where a child is involved is always difficult and can be extremely upsetting for the first responders on scene," Inspector Nathan O-Brien, Duty Operations Manager from NSW Ambulance, said.
"In the end, we're all human and a lot of us have children as well - that's why we do our training, so we can operate well as a team, we know what we have to do to help those who need us.
"Our crews did a fantastic job in doing everything they could to provide life-saving treatment.
"As road users we all need to take care while out and about – your life and the life of others can change in a split second."
