Two Australians are feared dead after a live export vessel they were on was reported missing in Japanese waters.
The Japanese Coast Guard has commenced a search for the Gulf Livestock 1, a cattle ship which issued a distress call shortly after 1am yesterday.
Typhoon Maysak has been raging in the area, creating strong winds and torrential rain that are hampering the search effort.
A total of 43 crew were onboard the almost 12-tonne cattle ship.
One Filipino crew member was found alive in waters with a life jacket last night. He is in a stable condition.
"The Australian Government is providing consular assistance to the families of two Australian crew members on board a cargo vessel reported missing in Japanese waters," a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) spokesperson said in a statement.

The Gulf Livestock 1 departed New Zealand on August 14 and was due to dock in China on Friday September 11.
The search continues.
