Woolworths is expanding its eco-friendly bag options by relaunching old-school paper bags from today for the first time in 40 years.
The paper bags are now available nationwide and are made from up to 70 per cent recycled paper.
They can carry up to six kilograms.
The bags will be sold for 20 cents.
The bags were trialled at Woolworths stores last year across Sydney in Double Bay, Rouse Hill, Marrickville Metro and Town Hall.
The supermarket giant says all paper used has been sourced responsibly, with non-recycled paper used with recycled paper to provide a stronger structure.
Woolworths Supermarkets managing director Claire Peters says the company is responding to customer demand.
"While the vast majority of our customers bring their own bags, we know customers sometimes drop by a store unplanned or can forget their bags when they're on the run," she said.
"For some time, customers have told us they'd like the option of a strong paper bag option, so we're pleased to now offer that choice at our checkouts, alongside our existing reusable plastic bags."
Woolworths plans to extend the option of paper bags to online customers for home delivery and its pick-up services.
It is the latest eco-friendly initiative by the supermarket giant to try and improve its green image.
In a trial, scheduled to be fully launched in 2021, Woolworths will allow grocery shoppers to receive a selection of products from manufacturers in reusable containers delivered to their homes.
When the product is finished, the container can be collected or dropped back in store, cleaned, refilled and reused.
