Domestic violence, sexual assault spike across NSW

Rates of domestic violence, sexual assault, and robberies have all spiked across New South Wales, with greater Sydney the hardest-hit area.

In the past two years, domestic violence-related assaults have increased by 4.1 per cent, while sexual assaults have risen by 7.9 per cent.

Robberies with a weapon other than a gun have also jumped up 10.5 per cent across the state, according to the latest figures from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR).

The only offence that trended down in the past two years was stealing from a person, which dipped down 10.4 per cent.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE-RELATED ASSAULTS

Several areas in greater Sydney experienced a greater rise in domestic violence-related assaults than the rest of the state.

In Baulkham Hills and the Hawkesbury, instances were up 38.7 per cent, while in Sutherland there was a 31 per cent rise in the crime.

Sydney's inner-west saw an increase of 14.9 per cent in domestic violence-related assaults, while they were up 12.1 per cent in the eastern suburbs.

In Parramatta there was a jump on eight per cent, while instances in the inner south west increased by 4.4 per cent.

SEXUAL ASSAULT

Sexual assault doubled in Sutherland in the past two years, with an increase of 50.7 per cent, or 38 additional incidents reported.

In Blacktown, there was a 16.6 per cent increase – or 49 more incidents.

REGIONAL NSW

Parts of regional NSW also saw a spike in crimes including a 16.3 per cent increase in domestic assault in the Riverina, and an 18.8 per cent increase in sexual assault in the Hunter region (excluding Newcastle).

There was a large increase in theft in other parts of the state. In the Murray region, vehicle theft was up 44 per cent, while break and enters at homes increased by 9.3 per cent in the Central West.
