Man accused of assaulting woman, taking baby at knifepoint

A NSW man accused of taking a baby from a woman at knifepoint in Wollongong, south of Sydney, has been charged with serious domestic violence offences.

The 23-year-old man allegedly broke into the woman's home in Berkeley on Sunday, grabbed her around the throat and threw her to the ground before repeatedly punching her in the head.

He then held a knife to the 23-year-old woman's throat before fleeing with a three-month-old baby.

Police said the woman was found with lacerations to her head, bruising to the upper body and bite marks to her hand before being taken to Wollongong Hospital.

The baby was quickly found with the man by police and was taken to hospital, but did not sustain any physical injuries.

The man was charged with a string of offences including special aggravated break and enter, choking without consent, assault and destruction of property.

He was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court later today.
