George Floyd's brother calls for calm during visit to spot where Floyd died

The brother of George Floyd has appealed for peace at the spot where he died as riots and protests continue across much of the United States.

Terrence Floyd appeared at the intersection in south Minneapolis where his brother died at the hands of a white police officer who used his knee to hold down his neck for more than eight minutes, last week.

The city has woken to a relatively calm morning after six days of mass demonstrations, many of which have turned violent.

It came as an independent autopsy, ordered by the Floyd family, found that the unarmed black man suffocated.

'Let's do this another way'

Wearing a face mask with the image of his brother's face on it, Terrence Floyd spent several minutes of silence at the flowers and other memorials in tribute to the 46-year-old before addressing the crowds.

"I understand you're upset," Mr Floyd said.

But, he said, civil unrest and destruction is "not going to bring my brother back at all. It may feel good for the moment, like when you drink, but when you are done, you're going to wonder what did you do".

He said his family is "a peaceful family. My family is God-fearing".

"In every case of police brutality the same thing has been happening. You have protests, you destroy stuff... so they want us to destroy ourselves. Let's do this another way.

"Let's stop thinking that voice don't matter and vote, not just vote for the president, but for the preliminary, both for everybody.

"Educate yourself and know who you're voting for. And that's how we go and hit them.

"Let's switch it up. Do this peacefully please."
