The report of the Hennepin County Medical Examiner in Minneapolis has ruled the death of George Floyd a homicide.
It comes just hours after an independent autopsy, ordered by Floyd's family, found that the unarmed black man suffocated.
The updated official report says that on May 25, Floyd experienced a cardiopulmonary arrest while being restrained by police.
Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter in connection to Floyd's death.
According to the medical examiner's findings, the official cause of death is stated as "cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint and neck compression."
The manner of death is homicide, a term the medical examiner uses to describe any death caused by the intentional actions of another person or persons.
The report goes on to note Floyd, 46, experienced a cardiopulmonary arrest while being restrained by Minneapolis Police Department.
Floyd also had significant conditions noted by the medical examiner, such as hypertensive heart disease, fentanyl intoxication and recent methamphetamine use.
Floyd was heard saying "I can't breathe" as Chauvin had his knee on his neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds, and two minutes and 53 seconds after Floyd was unresponsive.
According to a private autopsy requested by Floyd's family, he died from "asphyxiation from sustained pressure".
The medical examiners found that weight on the back, handcuffs and positioning were contributory factors because they impaired the ability of Floyd's diaphragm to function, according to the report.
The details were given in a media release by family attorney Ben Crump.
This came after the Hennepin County Medical Examiner found "no physical findings" to "support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation," according to the criminal complaint released by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office in the arrest of Chauvin.
Preliminary autopsy results cited in the complaint said combined effects of being restrained, potential intoxicants in Floyd's system and his underlying health issues, including heart disease, probably contributed to his death.
The family-ordered autopsy was performed by Dr. Michael Baden, who was New York's medical examiner between 1978 and 1979, and had previously performed independent autopsies on Eric Garner, who was killed by a police officer in Staten Island, New York, in 2014 and Michael Brown, who was shot by officers in Ferguson, Missouri, that same year.
