Coronavirus cases confirmed among NSW nightclub patrons

A nightclub in the New South Wales city of Newcastle is the latest venue of concern for health officials after 24 people who went there tested positive to COVID-19.

Some of those are likely to have the emerging Omicron variant and authorities have issued alerts for the Newcastle community.

NSW Health said 680 attendees of The Argyle House nightclub have been deemed close contacts and asked to isolate for seven days.

Confirmed coronavirus cases, linked to a previously reported outbreak on a party boat cruise on Sydney Harbour on December 3, attended the club, authorities said.

Anyone who attended the The Argyle House from 9pm on Wednesday, December 8 to 3am on Thursday, December 9 is a close contact and has been advised get tested and isolate for seven days, if vaccinated, or 14 days if unvaccinated.

Newcastle yesterday recorded its first Omicron case - a female traveller who had returned from the United Kingdom. She is isolating at home.

The Newcastle case emerged as a NSW resident became the first person in the country to taken to hospital with the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Australia.

The person is the first to be admitted to hospital with the new strain, thought to be highly infectious.

And this morning thousands of NSW residents are heading to the Queensland border as the Sunshine State eases some of the country's harshest COVID-19 travel restrictions.

The cruise, operated by Cadman Cruises, left King Street Wharf 9 at 7.30pm and returned about 11pm, last Friday, December 3.

NSW recorded 485 new cases of coronavirus yesterday, including 10 new cases of the strain.

From Wednesday, a new raft of NSW coronavirus restrictions will ease, with the unvaccinated allowed to enter pubs and cafes and other hospitality venues and shops.
