Rex adds Brisbane to flight network as airline eyes 'golden triangle'

Rex Airlines is ramping up its expansion outside of regional routes, adding Brisbane to its domestic network as the independent carrier targets the so-called Australian "Golden Triangle".

From December 17, Rex will operate twice-daily weekday flights between Melbourne and Brisbane and a return service on Saturday and Sunday.

The airline is offering discounted $79 fares from Melbourne to Brisbane on sale until November 30 for travel up to the end of April in 2022.

This morning the airline will also resume its Melbourne to Sydney and Melbourne to Canberra operations as much of its capital city and regional centre network rolls into action.

The "Golden Triangle" is a well-known flight network between Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane that hosts the most passengers, business travel and flight services in Australia.

It is most heavily serviced by Australia's two largest carriers in Qantas (along with its low-fare offering Jetstar) and Virgin Australia.

Rex's Deputy Chair John Sharp said the airline's offering was distinctly different to that of the two major players.

"All of our launch flights to new destinations have proved to be enormously popular and I have no doubt Brisbane will be the same, particularly with such affordable fares," Mr Sharp said.

"Rex is a full-service airline so these fares represent incredible value.

"Unlike our competitors, Rex passengers don't get slugged with hidden or extra costs as all fares on our domestic jet network include free 23kg checked baggage and refreshments on board."

Mr Sharp said Rex would base in Brisbane a Boeing 737-800NG to underpin the airline's Queensland expansion.

"Every time we've entered a new market, airfares have fallen dramatically as Qantas and Virgin Australia scramble to match our prices and I have no doubt this will be the case again," Mr Sharp said.

"Consumers are the big winners from competition and Rex will continue to champion the cause of safe, reliable and affordable air travel."

This morning the Queensland Government announced it would be accepting flight-bound visitors and residents to the state from 5pm today, following the state reaching a full vaccination rate of 70 per cent.

Arrivals from hotspot declared areas such as Victoria, NSW and the ACT are required to quarantine at home for 14 days provided they are fully vaccinated and can produce a current negative COVID-19 test.

Arrivals from non-hotspot areas do not have any quarantine restrictions but must be fully vaccinated and have a current negative COVID-19 test.
