Man dies in hit-run crash after crossing road in middle of the night

A man crossing the road in the middle of the night has been killed in a hit-run crash in Melbourne's north-east.

Police believe the man was crossing St Helena Road, near the intersection of Wallowa Road, in St Helena when he was struck by a vehicle shortly before 2.50am today.

The pedestrian, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

Police said the driver of the vehicle failed to stop and fled the scene.

Officers have been scouring the scene for clues since the early hours of the morning, taping off a section of the road as they investigate.

The exact circumstances of the crash are yet to be determined and the investigation is ongoing.
