Man charged over alleged hit-run that killed Melbourne dad

A man has been charged over his alleged involvement in a hit-run crash that claimed the life of a Melbourne father-of-four and severely injured another worker.

Traffic workers Timmy Rakei and Shaun Kilmartin had been setting up cones on the road near the corner of Hall Road and Lats Avenue in Carrum Downs when they were allegedly struck by a red Holden about 7.15am on Tuesday.

Mr Rakei died and Mr Kilmartin suffered life-altering injuries in the crash.

A 25-year-old man from Carrum Downs was last night charged with a range of offences including being an accessory to impede, apprehension or prosecution, driving while disqualified, reckless conduct endangering life, driving in a dangerous manner while being pursued by police and failing to stop when directed by police.

He has been remanded to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court today.

A 30-year-old man of no fixed address remains in custody after being held overnight.

He is expected to be interviewed by detectives today.

"Detectives from the MCIU would like to thank detectives from the Southern Metro Crime Team, Frankston Crime Investigation Unit and Fugitive Taskforce for their assistance in the investigation," a Victoria Police statement read.

"Police would also like to thank the public and the media for the large number of calls received."

Police allege that after the crash, the driver was picked up by another man driving a black Hyundai SUV about 7.45am.

The black Hyundai SUV that police had been searching for was also located yesterday.

Mr Kilmartin, 38, from Traralgon man was released from the Royal Melbourne Hospital yesterday after undergoing surgery due to the severity of his leg injury.

The Traralgon man yesterday spoke from his hospital bed, paying tribute to his colleague.

"He was such a likeable bloke and always took care of the people he worked with," he wrote.

"I can't imagine what his family are going through. They need all the support we can give.

"You just don't expect something like this to happen. It didn't have to happen."
