Floods continue to rise in Forbes with peak expected tomorrow

The New South Wales Central West town of Forbes is braced for a flood emergency today, with residents preparing to evacuate.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has warned that floodwater levels on the Lachlan River could match or exceed those seen in 2016.

"Major flooding is expected at Forbes from Tuesday with the peak expected during Wednesday," the BoM said in its latest warning.

"Major flooding is also expected at Cottons Weir and Jemalong from Wednesday."

The BoM said that the Lachlan River was expected to exceed the major flood level of 10.55m at Forbes on Tuesday night, with a predicted peak of about 10.65m during Wednesday.

Flooding is already taking place at Cowra.

Forbes farmer Scott Darcy said if the floods matched the 2016 event, he expected to lose up to $500,000 in damages.

"It is a matter of picking up the pieces at the other end," he told Today.

Mr Darcy called for the wall of the Wyangala dam to be raised, and said the release of floodwaters could have been better managed.

"They're trying to keep that as full as they can for the irrigators, but where we are now, it's hurting us irrigators and just average farmers that are down the Lachlan," he said.

There are multiple flood warnings in place across NSW, with the BoM expected to update them later today.
