Gold Coast City Council has been labelled the Christmas Grinch after confirming its annual Christmas lights competition will not go ahead.
The popular event was cancelled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic but had been expected to go ahead this year.
However, Mayor Tom Tate confirmed the event had been cancelled for good, telling the Gold Coast Bulletin the council was "moving with the times".
Devastated families say the competition was a way to create meaningful memories and the decision has killed the Christmas spirit.
However, Cr Tate defended the decision, saying the council will still install light displays in key areas and hold a number of Christmas events.
The Gold Coast City Council has created a page on its website where Christmas spirit in the community can be showcased.
