Concerns sick babies at Melbourne exposed to COVID-19

There are grave concerns some of the sickest babies have been exposed to COVID-19 at Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital.

It is understood a parent unknowingly brought the virus into the neonatal intensive care unit known as the Butterfly Ward, exposing 29 premature and ill newborn babies.

Two of the newborns are considered to be Tier One close contacts due to the infected parent spending several hours in the room that the two babies shared on Thursday and Friday night.

The exposure comes after a number of families were forced to isolate in their child's room at the hospital for 14 days last week, after the cancer ward was exposed to COVID-19.

Parents and carers who enter the hospital will now have to undergo a rapid antigen test and return a negative result before they are permitted to enter.
