Melbourne truck drivers preparing to block traffic in new protest action

Truck drivers across Melbourne are preparing to disrupt traffic this hour in an escalation of last week's anti-vaccination protests.

Commuters are being warned to expect delays this morning as a truck convoy is due to converge in the city's south, aiming to block one the Westgate Freeway.

Demonstrators are planning to disrupt traffic from Port Melbourne to Tullamarine Airport.

Already this morning, several bus loads of police have arrived at Port Melbourne hoping to stop the protest action before it begins.

The protests are the latest sign of unrest following last week's rallies in response to the Victorian Government mandating the coronavirus vaccine for the construction sector.

Yesterday Premier Daniel Andrews refused to say whether or not unvaccinated people in Victoria will be able to get access to freedoms when lockdowns end.

It's in stark contrast to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian's position, who says vaccinated and non-vaccinated people in that state would be subjected to the same set of rules from December.

But Mr Andrews warned against loosening restrictions for those who chose not to be vaccinated.

"I do not want to be signalling to people 'well, don't bother; don't bother being part of the 80 per cent [because] there's no urgency, you'll only be locked out of the pub for a few weeks'," he said.

"No one's chasing 100 per cent … but we're going to be pushing for as long as we possibly can.

"We've not even turned our mind really to when some of the vaccinated economy ... might change and when everyone might be on an equal footing."

Victoria recorded 705 new cases of coronavirus on Monday.
