Meteorologist explains how Ida reversed the flow of Mississippi River

Hurricane Ida has blasted ashore as one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the US, briefly reversing the flow of the Mississippi River.

CNN International meteorologist and weather anchor Tom Sater said the phenomenon was "extremely rare".

"There's a lot of dynamics to it," Mr Sater said.

"You have to have the exact approach and angle of these strong winds and waves, and the force of the water, to push up into the mouth of the Mississippi."

Mr Sater said the reverse flow lasted for about four hours.
