It comes as Australia's two biggest cities are simultaneously in lockdown for the first time this year, with Melbourne frantically trying to contain an outbreak that originated in NSW.

Among today's new cases is a removalist who worked at a major apartment building in Sydney's CBD while infectious.

Residents were informed about the case overnight and are being urged to get tested.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian predicted case numbers would again rise today, with 28 of yesterday's infections out in the community before being diagnosed.

A further seven were in the community for part of the time while infectious.

Among yesterday's new infections were a pregnant woman who underwent surgery at Liverpool Hospital and two paramedics who worked at Liverpool Ambulance station.

The continuing resurgence of fresh outbreaks three weeks into lockdown has sparked speculation that tougher rules will be introduced, with the premier reportedly holding urgent meetings late yesterday to discuss possible measures.

Of as yesterday, there were currently 73 people in NSW in hospital with coronavirus, 19 of whom were in intensive care.

Those in the ICU include one in their 20s, one in their 30s, two in their 40s, five in their 50s, six in their 60s, three in their 70s and one in their 80s.

Five people in Intensive Care are currently being ventilated.

In Victoria, six new COVID-19 cases were reported this morning on the first day of a five-day lockdown.

This is Victoria's fifth major lockdown since the pandemic began, with today's latest infection numbers coming as the state grapples with a growing number of exposure sites.

The latest outbreak is believed to be a result of three removalists who drove from NSW to South Australia, stopping in Victoria on the way, and a family who moved from Sydney to Melbourne and broke quarantine rules.
