Sydney removalists who brought Delta strain to Victoria won't be charged

The Sydney removalists who brought the Delta strain of COVID-19 into Victoria and sparked a state-wide lockdown will not be charged for any breaches of health orders.

The Department of Health's compliance and enforcement team yesterday completed its investigation into the three removalists, probing whether they had breached the Public Health and Wellbeing Act and the Chief Health Officer's directions.

The findings were then provided to Victoria Police for review.

Victoria Police said in a statement this morning assessments found there was "no evidence" of other offending.

"The investigation findings have been provided to Victoria Police for noting and to consider whether any further investigation is required in relation to other legislation," the statement read.

"Victoria Police has undertaken an assessment of the material provided and determined there is no evidence of other offending.

"As such, Victoria Police will not be taking any action and this matter is closed from a police perspective."

The department was probing whether the removalists had entered the state lawfully with the correct permits and whether they followed health orders during their stay.

The trio drove to Victoria on July 8, delivering furniture to a four-person household in Craigieburn before removing furniture from the Ariele Apartment complex in Maribyrnong.

The three removalists were unmasked while working, but in some cases, strenuous work can be exempt from the mandate.

They then stayed overnight in their vehicle cabin, before driving to South Australia on July 9.

The first removalist tested positive to COVID-19 on July 11 after returning to Sydney, prompting up to 200 apartment residents to go into lockdown.
