Sydney lockdown could extend until mid-September

Greater Sydney could be in lockdown for another month at least as COVID-19 cases remain stubbornly high, despite tightened measures being imposed.

The NSW crisis cabinet is due to convene later this morning, where it is expected to be announced that the government will request financial modelling for a lockdown that lasts until mid-September.

It comes as the state recorded 141 cases of community transmission yesterday with 38 of those infectious within the community.

Of the locally acquired cases, 87 are linked to a known case or cluster and the source of infection for 54 cases is under investigation.

The state also recorded two more deaths in this latest outbreak, including a woman in her 30s.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the death of Adriana Midori Takara, 38, was a warning COVID-19 was potentially deadly for younger people.

"If anybody thinks this is a disease just affecting older people, please think again," she said.

NSW Health's Jeremy McAnulty said a teenager was one of 43 people in intensive care.

Another seven were in their 20s, three were in their 30s, 14 in their 50s, 12 in their 60s and six in their 70s.

Meanwhile, police across Sydney are continuing to track down and issue infringement notices to thousands of people who attended an anti-lockdown rally in the CBD on Saturday.

Lockdown protests cram into the streets of Sydney's CBD.

More than 5,500 reports have been made to police, so far, from concerned members of the public willing to dob in people they know.

NSW Police Minister David Elliott said that the reports are a "great start" to tracking down everyone involved and repeated his plea for anyone with information to come forward.

"As of this morning 63 individuals have been charged for offences yesterday, 35 have been arrested and 16 are before the courts today," Mr Elliott said yesterday.
