New face mask mandate for Sydney apartments

Face masks are set to become mandatory in all shared indoor areas of apartment blocks across Greater Sydney and surrounds.

The new public health order – which has been expected but not mandated – will take effect from this Tuesday, July 13, and applies to Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains, the Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour.

Common areas where you must wear a mask include: a shared foyer or lobby of an apartment block; lifts, stairwells, corridors and shared laundry facilities.

The new law applies anyone entering the building including residents, visitors, building managers, tradespeople, contractors and people delivering food, mail or parcels.

The public health order applies to any residential building that is strata titled, community titled or company titled.

You do not need to wear a mask inside your own apartment.

NSW case numbers explode with warning worst is yet to come

New South Wales recorded 77 new cases of COVID-19 and one death in the past 24 hours to 8pm.

Of today's 77 new cases, 42 were out in the community for all or part of their infectious period.

The results come from more than 48,000 tests - a number NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is urging residents to sustain in order to curb the spiralling outbreak.

But the sobering figures are unlikely to mark the peak of the outbreak, Ms Berejiklian has warned, saying she would "be shocked" if tomorrow's figures were under 100.

"Given the number of people exposed in the community overnight, I'm anticipating the numbers in New South Wales will be greater than 100 tomorrow," Ms Berejiklian said.

"That's what I'm anticipating."
