Fears NSW's outbreak is spiralling after largest-ever single-day increase

There are fears NSW's COVID-19 outbreak is spiralling out of control of health authorities after the state recorded its largest-ever single-day increase yesterday.

NSW recorded 163 cases on Saturday, marking the largest daily increase since the outbreak of the pandemic.

Of the new cases, 66 were household contacts and 45 were infectious in the community.

However, there was some good news, as more than 93,000 people came forward to get tested, another record.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the concerning numbers which continue to increase "are telling us is we have a continuing and growing problem particular in west and southwest Sydney".

He said family transmission and people catching the virus in shops and workplaces remained the number one issue.

Of yesterday's cases, the Canterbury-Bankstown LGA had 34 new cases, Cumberland had 26, Blacktown had 15 and Liverpool had six.

There are currently 139 people in NSW hospitals with COVID-19.37 are in intensive care and 17 are on ventilators. 55 of those are under 55.

Only one person with the virus in ICU is partially vaccinated. The others have not had any doses.

After thousands of people attended an illegal protest in Sydney's CBD yesterday, largely maskless and with little to no social distancing, more concerns have been raised over the possibility that the march would becoming a super-spreader event.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian was furious yesterday, describing protesters as "selfish".

"I am utterly disgusted," she said.
