Dog attack hot spots in NSW

This is the map which plots where 4359 dog attacks, hundreds of them deemed serious, took place in New South Wales over the last year.

The Central Coast Local Government Area ranked top of the list, with 252 attacks, ahead of Leeton in the Riverina with 251 and 214 in Wollongong, south of Sydney.

9News.com.au reviewed 12 months of dog attack statistics for each LGA in NSW, from the Office of Local Government data.

There were more than 4000 dog attacks across NSW in the last year.

Of the more than 4300 attacks, which included attacks on animals, people were the victim in 2468 cases.

There were 693 attacks on people categorised as "serious".

Inside the metropolitan Sydney area, Blacktown, Campbelltown, Mosman and Canterbury-Bankstown recorded most attacks.

As expected, the number of attacks in each LGA increased in relation with higher rates of dog ownership.

Certain breeds are at the top of the list for reported dog attacks in NSW.

The American Staffordshire terrier has been involved in most attacks, with the Staffordshire bull terrier next and Australian cattle dog third.

There were 536 attacks where the breed was unidentified.

"Dog attacks are a serious problem," an RSPCA NSW spokesperson told 9News.com.au.

But RSPCA NSW does not support breed specific legislation, such as calls to ban American Staffordshire terriers, the spokesperson added.

"Every animal should be judged on an individual level because every animal has the potential to be dangerous."
