NT desert race paused due to 'emergency incident'

Organisers of a major off-road desert race in the Northern Territory have been forced to declare the day's racing following an emergency incident on track.

Organisers of the Tatts Finke Desert Race said the return leg of the bike category had been cancelled after they became aware of an incident 35 kilometres down the track.

Emergency services are on site and attending to the scene.

There are early reports that one person may have been killed.

"Motorsport Australia and event organisers are working with emergency services to put in appropriate controls to manage the scene," organisers posted to social media.

"We are working with relevant authorities to follow all procedures and NT Police will provide an update in due course."
