Woman in hospital after being stabbed and chased by man

A woman is in hospital after being stabbed multiple times, allegedly by a man believed to be her former husband in Sydney's west yesterday.

The 46-year-old woman was attacked in her car after meeting a man in a cul-de-sac in Stanhope Gardens, with the incident caught entirely on CCTV.

The video shows the woman pulling up in a car to meet a man and a short time later, she is seen bolting from the car and calling for help with her alleged attacker chasing behind.

The man in the video can then be seen lashing at the woman with what appears to be a knife while neighbours rushed from their homes to assist after hearing the commotion on the street.

"The neighbour said the son had come home about five or ten minutes beforehand and could hear screaming from within the car and the son had thought the lady was giving birth," resident Matt Forster said.

Another resident, Julie Cameron, said she too heard the screams.

"It was about 6.30 or 7 and we'd just finished mowing the lawns and we could just hear this screaming and I looked but I didn't register that she was seriously in trouble," she said.

"The lady got out of the car and she was just covered in blood, think she'd been stabbed a few times and she went over to the neighbour's house."

Mr Forster said he'd just put his children to bed when he and his wife heard loud banging on the front door.

After opening the door, he said he saw the woman lying on the ground with blood and stab wounds to her hands.

"She was laying on her back and then she managed to get onto all fours," Mr Forster said.

Police found a man a short time later hiding in a nearby bush reserve before accompanying him to hospital.

The woman is also in hospital recovering from her injuries.

She is believed to be in a stable condition.
