West Australians rally to help victims of state's bushfires

West Australian's have rallied together to help the victims of the state's bushfires, with one charity so overwhelmed by donations they had to close their doors.

The out of control bushfire that tore through Wooroloo in the Perth Hills earlier this month left 86 families without homes and scorched 11,000 hectares in its wake.

Money raised at yesterday's sale at the Claremont Showgrounds will go directly to the Lord Mayors distress relief fund. At time of publishing there was $12.9 million raised.

"All of this stuff is for sale it's priced to sell. We're really excited to be able to open our doors," Claremont Showgrounds event coordinator Jack Martin told 9News.

"Anything that's not sold today will be going to a WA charity or community group that needs it most."

Shoppers told 9News buying items at today's sale was the least they could do.

"The fact that it's for the bushfires of course that's a no brainer," shopper Angela Melia told 9News.

"They need all they can get. We know some people that have lost their yards and some that have lost their houses. It's just shocking," another shopper, Phillis Pool, told 9News.

The sale at the showgrounds was prompted by generous Western Australians.

"All we asked for was a few bed sheets and sleeping bags for some people that were housed here during the evacuation," Mr Martin said.

"As you can see behind me - we ended up with a whole pavilions worth."
