Two men charged with the prolonged torture of an injured kangaroo

Two men have been charged with the prolonged torture of an injured kangaroo in the NSW Central Tablelands last year.

A man, 26, was arrested last August in relation to gun, drug, and driving offences.

The man's phone was seized and examined as part of the investigation and police allegedly found animal cruelty videos on it, NSW Police said.

Police will allege the phone contained videos of kangaroos being shot in the Mullion State Forest, north of Orange, and an act of cruelty upon an injured kangaroo.

The 26-year-old was arrested again in Wellington last week and has since been charged with 16 offences.

These include torture and causing prolonged suffering to an animal, committing an act of cruelty on an animal and hunting an animal in a forestry area.

He has also been charged with possessing a shortened firearm, two counts of possessing an unregistered firearm, two counts of possessing an unauthorised firearm, two counts of not keeping a firearm safe and two counts of possessing ammunition without a licence.

The man is also facing two counts of acquiring a firearm subject to a prohibition order and two counts of acquiring ammunition subject to a prohibition order.

The man appeared before Orange Local Court on Friday, where he was remanded in custody to appear before the same court on March 29.

Another man, 27, was also arrested and charged with animal cruelty and firearm offences.

He is facing eight charges and was also charged with police pursuit relating to an outstanding matter.

He remains in custody and will appear before Orange Local Court on February 15.
